AMURU – Authorities in Amuru District have instructed the contractor of the Alworo Koma Water for Production Project in Lakang sub-county to promptly address defects identified at the site before the facility is handed over to the district and beneficiary communities.

The project, valued at more than sh400m, was launched in June 2025 and is being implemented by Togo Akom Construction Company Limited under the supervision of engineers from the Ministry of Water and Environment.

Key components of the project include the construction of a water dam to store water during the dry season, installation of solar-powered pumps to transfer water into 10,000-litre storage tanks, construction of a powerhouse, and establishment of watering points for both small and large animals.

However, during a recent inspection by district leaders and technical officials, concerns were raised about the facility's performance.

The team observed that the pumping system's water pressure was too low and that water was leaking from the main dam.

Amuru Resident District Commissioner Osborn Geoffrey Oceng expressed dissatisfaction with the state of the project and instructed the contractor to address all defects before the facility is handed over to the community.

“I am not impressed by the amount of time it takes to fill the tanks and the fact that water is escaping from the main dam,” Oceng said during the inspection.

Responding to the concerns, Eng. Ssali Ismael from the Ministry of Water and Environment assured district authorities that corrective measures would be undertaken immediately to ensure the project meets the requirements.

“The contractor will be back on-site this weekend to fix the few defects that have been identified,” Eng. Ssali said, adding that the ministry remains committed to ensuring the project is completed and handed over to the community within the month.

The Ministry of Water and Environment has been implementing similar water-for-production projects across the country to improve livelihoods by supporting crop production and providing reliable water sources for livestock, particularly during prolonged dry seasons.

Local leaders in Lakang sub-county welcomed the project, describing it as a vital intervention for livestock farmers.

They noted that access to a dependable water source will reduce the need for animals to travel long distances in search of water during drought periods.

Once completed, the Alworo Koma Water for Production Project is expected to strengthen agricultural productivity and enhance resilience among farming communities in Amuru.
