The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Operation Mlinzi wa Kimya (The Silent Guardian) on Friday, July 31, 2026, welcomed Col. Francis Aragamoi as the new Battle Group Commander during a handover and takeover ceremony held in South Sudan.
The UPDF, in a statement, said Col Aragamoi takes over from Col Bernard Kashemeza, who is set to attend a course at the National Defence College-Uganda (NDC-U).
Presiding over the ceremony, the Joint Task Force Commander, Brig. Gen. Anthony Lukwago, described leadership transition as an important aspect of institutional growth, continuity, and professional development.

He observed that Kashemeza's selection for further military training is a recognition of an officer's performance and potential, adding that such opportunities enhance individual careers while strengthening the institution.
Brig Gen Lukwago commended Col Kashemeza for his exemplary leadership, loyalty, commitment, and dedicated service during his tenure with 'Operation Mlinzi wa Kimya' in South Sudan.
In his remarks, Col Aragamoi expressed gratitude to the UPDF leadership for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the Battle Group under 'Operation Mlinzi wa Kimya'.
He pledged to promote teamwork, open engagement, and professionalism as key pillars for addressing operational challenges and improving mission performance.
The ceremony was attended by commanding officers, component commanders, the Special Forces Command complement, senior officers, and junior officers.
About Operation Mlinzi wa Kimya
Operation Mlinzi wa Kimya is a military deployment by the UPDF in South Sudan.
Launched in March 2025 under the direction of Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the mission supports the South Sudan People's Defence Force to help secure Juba, stabilise the capital and reinforce regional peace following internal political and military tensions.
