Police in Amolatar district are hunting for two clan chiefs accused of leading a mob that beat a man to death on Sunday, October 19 2025, in a suspected case of theft, adding to the growing list of murder incidents that continue to dominate High Court sessions in the Lango sub-region.
The deceased, identified as Joel Okello, was allegedly attacked by a group of about seven people led by clan chiefs Tom Richard Okello and Wilfred Ongeng of the Bako clan. The mob reportedly beat him with sticks until he collapsed and died at his home in Oribcing village, Agikdak parish, Agikdak sub-county.
According to a report from local leaders, the attackers also stole goats and cash found in the deceased’s pockets before fleeing the scene. The two clan leaders are still on the run.
North Kyoga regional police spokesperson, Patrick Jimmy Okema, confirmed the incident, saying three suspects have so far been arrested in connection with the murder.
“We have apprehended three suspects identified as Ivan Angii (21), Jimmy Olwa (61), and Emmy Ojam (19), all residents of Oribcing Village,” Okema said. “They are being held at Amolatar Central Police Station as investigations continue.”
He explained that the deceased was accused of stealing a bicycle belonging to one of the suspects and was arrested at about 9:00 a.m. before the mob took the law into their own hands.
“The group started caning him all over the body until he became unconscious and died,” Okema said.
Police officers led by the District Police Commander (DPC) visited the scene, documented evidence, and recovered broken sticks believed to have been used in the assault. Statements were also recorded from witnesses, including the area LC1 chairperson.
The body of the deceased was taken to Amolatar Health Centre IV for a post-mortem examination.
Okema condemned the act, warning residents against mob justice and urging them to cooperate with police investigations instead of taking the law into their own hands.
“We continue to appeal to the public to desist from acts of mob justice,” he said. “People should support the police with information and allow lawful investigations to take their course.”
The deceased is survived by a sick wife, who is still hospitalised, and four children now left without a caregiver.
Police say a manhunt is ongoing for the remaining suspects, including the two clan chiefs, as cases of murder continue to top the lists for trial by the High Court in the region.
