Police in Apac District are investigating a case of murder by mob action following the lynching of a 50-year-old man suspected to have been involved in an earlier killing.

The incident occurred on Monday (January 5), at around 11:00 am in Amii-Amola Village, Ibuje subcounty.

The deceased was identified as Ume Saidi, also known as Anam Francis, a peasant farmer and resident of the area.

According to preliminary police findings, Saidi had allegedly been on the run after hacking to death one Moses Otim on the night of January 1, 2026, in the same village.

Police further state that tensions escalated after Saidi’s son, Denis Ogweta, 21, was reportedly killed by an angry mob.

Following his son’s death, Saidi allegedly issued threats to kill several people in the community, triggering fear and panic among residents and forcing some to flee their homes.

On Sunday, December 4, members of the public reportedly spotted Saidi hiding in a nearby bush.

An angry mob descended on him, chased him, and lynched him before police could intervene.

Confirming the incident, North Kyoga Region Police Spokesperson Jimmy Patrick Okema strongly condemned the act of mob justice, saying the body was recovered and conveyed to Apac General Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.

No suspects have been arrested so far, and police say inquiries into the matter are ongoing.
