Christians from St Padre Pio Catholic Parish, Kabulamuliro, off Entebbe Road, joined the rest of the Catholic world in celebrating the beginning of Holy Week with a 10km procession from Voice Mall Hotel in Bwebajja to their church.

Carrying palm leaves, the faithful sang hymns as they walked in commemoration of Christ’s passion and death. The procession concluded with a solemn Mass in remembrance of the Passion of Christ.

The large number of worshippers briefly disrupted traffic along Entebbe Road, with their procession occupying one side of the road for nearly an hour.

The event marked Palm Sunday, retracing Jesus' traditional route into Jerusalem 2,000 years ago, when he was welcomed by people waving palm branches.

For Christians, it symbolises welcoming Jesus into our hearts and reaffirming our commitment to follow him.

Before the procession began, parish priest Fr Remigius Kasibante led prayers, urging the congregation to intensify their devotions during Holy Week, focusing on peace, tolerance, humility, and love.

Fr Kasibante, accompanied by his curate Fr Richard Ogwom and Deacon Charles Masereka, blessed the palm leaves and reminded the faithful, "This week we are requested to pray a lot. Today we conclude the 40 days of Lent, and we are celebrating the day Jesus entered Jerusalem."

During Mass, Deacon Masereka emphasised the depth of Jesus’ suffering, telling the congregation, "We Christians should understand the intricacy of the cross that Jesus carried on his way to crucifixion and understand that love for one."

The Mass was attended by several parish leaders, including the head of laity, Eng. Andrew Sserunjogi.

Palm Sunday, the sixth and final Sunday of Lent, marks Jesus Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem and is observed a week before Easter.

Holy Week in the Catholic Church

Holy Week begins on Monday and includes several significant events leading up to Easter. Among them is the Chrism Mass, during which bishops bless the holy oils used in sacraments throughout the year.

On Holy Thursday, priests will wash the feet of 12 individuals, commemorating Jesus’ act of humility toward his disciples. This will be followed by Good Friday, marking Christ’s crucifixion.
