Peruth Chemutai set a new national record at the Eugene Diamond League with a mammoth 8:55.09 seconds in the women’s 3000m steeplechase.

Her previous record of 9:01.45 made her an Olympic champion. This performance in Oregon at Hayward Field was simply electric.

The first Ugandan female Olympic gold medallist was in record-breaking mood and looked the part from the start of the race when she stayed with race leader Beatrice Chepkoech who started the race with a blistering pace.

Halfway through the race, the two had managed to break away from world record holder Winifred Yavi and were in a race against the two of them.

Chepkoech who has defeated Chemutai three times this season looked like she was in a race to extend her winning record but the Ugandan waited until the final lap to show off the pace that made her an Olympic Champion.

She ran strategically ensuring to use the barriers to stay in touch with the Kenyan and the pressure for the Ugandan was even more telling in the final barrier.

With the finish in sight, Chemutai was spot on with her finish and crossed the finish line with a new personal best, which is the season best and the new world-leading time.

Last year Chemutai barely had any races but this Olympic year she is looking more and more like the finished article and has deservedly dipped under 9 minutes.
