CDF contributes sh100m towards Tooro king's coronation

As Tooro Kingdom prepares for the inauguration of its new king, Edward Rukidi Nyabongo, on September 29, 2026, Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has contributed sh100 million towards the ceremony.
The contribution was delivered by the CDF’s military assistant, Col. Chris Muwumba, to Tooro kingdom’s chief prince, Omusuuga Charles Kamurasi, who heads the Babiito royal clan and plays a crucial role in the succession process.
“Today my military assistant, Colonel Muwumba, delivered 100 million shillings on my behalf to the Omusuuga of Tooro. This is our humble contribution to the coronation of the new king. God bless Tooro,” Gen. Kainerugaba said.
The ceremony is set to take place at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal city, following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV on August 27, 2026, in the United States of America, where he was receiving treatment for cancer.
Last week, the kingdom said it was actively fundraising for the coronation of King Nyabongo I, setting a target of sh925 million to cover the costs of the ceremony.
The kingdom’s organising committee launched a campaign appealing to the people of Tooro, friends of the kingdom and well-wishers to contribute generously. The fundraising drive includes cash contributions from Tooro’s nine counties.
The ceremony is set to take place at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal city, following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV on August 27, 2026, in the United States of America, where he was receiving treatment for cancer.

Richard Rwabuhinga, who heads protocol for the organising committee, said the ceremony is expected to bring together leaders from traditional institutions across Uganda and other parts of the world.
He said invitations had also been extended to politicians, businesspeople, heads of diplomatic missions, distinguished dignitaries and members of the public.
In August, the Babiito clan, under the leadership of Omusuuga, selected Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the successor to the late King Oyo, a decision that was rejected by some members of the royal family led by Princess Ruth Komuntale, the sister of the late king.
King Oyo’s mother, Best Kemigisa, has insisted that the late king left a will explaining how he should be succeeded. She also insisted that the late king had a son and that the Babiito had moved too quickly on the succession issue.
