Schools in Busoga region have been asked to allow fees defaulter candidates to sit final examinations.

The call by the Jinja City North Member of Parliament David Agha was during a convention of senior secondary school students in Busoga at the battle of the stars competition. The event which took place at Jinja City Council headquarters saw students from 22 schools answer different questions in both arts and science subjects.

Agha also called on the Government to come up with measures for educating the public on how the new curriculum works.  He revealed that many people have failed to understand and analyse the new curriculum including himself.

He also commended the education ministry for prioritising the vocational and innovational skills in the current curriculum.

Jinja district education officer Eria Kisambira said they are still assessing the new curriculum though research shows that 20 per cent of the teachers in Busoga have failed to cope up with it.

Richard Luvaruka, the in-charge of Wakitaka Health Centre III in Jinja city, asked the students never to think about money and not to be embraced by the immoral habits and behaviour. He argued them to focus on their education and should always report sexual violence cases to the officials concerned.

Zakia Nalulondo, the organiser of the competition, said it was aimed at closing the academic gap in schools mostly those in Busoga since many of the schools prioritise co-curricular activities.

Triangle High School, Iganga was the winner and was awarded a trophy and shillings 500,000. The runners-up were PMM Girls School and Central College Kamuli.

Some of the participants explained that the competitions helped them to advance their knowledge mostly in science subjects and they also created friends since they are all from different schools.

David Agha said schools in Busoga are still challenged by poor infrastructure and poor feeding.
