The Deputy Commander of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Artillery Division, Brig. Gen. Rogers Kitwala, has urged students at Bunyoro Presidential Skilling Hub to embrace entrepreneurship and use their training to achieve economic independence.

Delivering a lecture of opportunity on the transition from political to economic independence, Kitwala said the Presidential Skilling Hubs were established to address economic challenges, including youth unemployment, by equipping young people with practical, marketable skills.

He challenged the students to establish income-generating enterprises, form cooperative associations, and use social media to market their products.

He emphasised discipline, responsible time management and personal health, cautioning against laziness and the misuse of digital platforms.

“I want you to stand and say, ‘I am not a job seeker, I am a job creator. My skill is my freedom. I will not disappoint my parents, my President and my country,’” Kitwala said.

The Manager of Bunyoro Zonal Industrial Skilling Hub, Francis Byaruhanga, encouraged the students to maximise their training and share their knowledge with other young people in their communities to promote economic transformation.

The Director of Studies, Rogers Mugabi, said the initiative had helped young people with limited formal education and those without employment acquire practical skills through training programmes lasting at least six months.

The courses studied include carpentry, hairdressing and cosmetology, welding and metal fabrication, tailoring, baking and bricklaying.

The event was attended by the Artillery Division Political Commissar, Maj Onesmas Kakuru; the Head of Mindset Change, retired Lt Keith Byaruhanga; teaching staff and other invited guests.
