Security has been beefed up at Kisoro municipal offices as Bukimbiri county aspirants get nominated.

Differently dressed security operatives have been deployed in Kisoro district at the municipal head offices as Bukimbiri county aspirants get nominated.

Bukimbiri county parliamentary seat fell vacant following a June court ruling which set aside the results of the 2021 elections.

According to the ruling by Justices, Eva K. Luswata and Frederick Engonda Ntende, they ruled that the Bukimbiri County Member of Parliament, Eddie Kwizera, was wrongly elected as the area MP.

The by-election follows a petition which indicated that the ballot paper for Bukimbiri County Constituency elections had the wrong names of other candidates on the polling day.

The petitioners told the court that the ballot paper had the names of Arthus Kazoora Atuhwereire, Victor Atwiine, Didas Kaginda Byaruhanga, and Donozio Kahonda Mugabe which were different from the names of the duly nominated candidates, who were James Owebeyi, Asgario Turyagyenda, Eddi Kwizera, and Martin Muhereza.

Around 8:50 am, Asigario an NRM-leaning aspirant arrived at the Electoral Commission (EC) head offices and was directed to head to the municipal head offices where the nomination of the aspirants was to take place.

At around 9:40 am, Asigario was duly nominated by Daniel Nayebare the district returning officer of Kisoro district.

Asigario said on top of his agenda, he is ready and willing to work for the people of Bukimbiri county.

“I don’t care whether my party has forsaken me but I am ready to work for my people,” he said.

By 10:51 am, James Owebeyi the Forum for the Democratic Change (FDC) aspirant for Bukimbiri county was also nominated.

Bukimbiri county aspirants are expected to be nominated  for two days including August 1 and 2.

The nominated candidates are expected to conduct campaign meetings for seven days from Wednesday, August 3. Polling and tallying of results for the by-election of the Member of Parliament will be conducted on Thursday, August 11, 2022.

By press time, only two aspirants had been nominated.
