Buganda Kingdom has reacted to the speech National Unity Platform (NUP) party president Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine made at a rally in Luwero district which appeared to whip up tribalistic sentiments in the region.

While addressing a large crowd at Kasana playground in Luwero on Friday (September 8), Kyagulanyi made a myriad of claims that the Government says border on criminal libel, especially against President Yoweri Museveni.

He also quoted Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II as saying during his 30th coronation anniversary on July 31, 2023, that he has no administrative powers.

The minister of information and spokesperson of the Kingdom of Buganda, Israel Kazibwe, told New Vision Online on Tuesday that Kyagulanyi is a leader of a political party and he made the remarks in his capacity as a leader of that party.

“It should be his party and not Buganda, to comment on the inference of his remarks. Kabaka's remarks at the 30th coronation anniversary were in reference to the need for honest and open dialogue concerning the form of government that would serve Uganda best,” he said during an exclusive interview.

He said according to the Justice Benjamin Odoki Commission and Prof. Fredrick Ssempebwa Constitutional Review Commission, the majority of Ugandans prefer a federal system of government.

“Kyagulanyi is a member of the Mbogo clan of Buganda. However, he isn’t an official of the Kingdom, and the Kingdom sees no need to comment on statements of persons who aren’t directly in the service of the Kingdom. We believe Kyagulanyi or his party should be the ones to comment,” Kazibwe said.

He also stated that all land belonging to the Kingdom is managed by the Buganda Land Board.

“Whenever Kingdom land is affected in any way, Buganda Land Board reacts as is necessary. There are issues of land grabbers in many parts of Buganda. At the opening of the Buganda Lukiiko, the Kabaka called upon the courts to expedite the adjudication of land cases so that the law may protect those affected by land grabbers,” he said.
