Betty Ssentamu, the sister of Opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine, has for the second time lost an election petition against Gomba district Woman Member of Parliament Sylvia Nayebale (National Resistance Movement party).

Ssentamu, who was the National Unity Platform’s (NUP) party flag-bearer in the 2021 general election, had her petition dismissed by Mpigi High Court judge Alex Ajiji on Tuesday on grounds that she failed to prove the allegations of bribery against her rival, Nayebale.

“Nayebale is the duly-elected Woman MP for Gomba district,” Ajiji declared.
Nayebale won the seat after gathering 30,253 votes against Ssentamu’s 22,657 votes.

The judge ordered Ssentamu to pay half of the costs met by Sylvia Nayebale in defending her election victory in the various court sessions.

Background
On August 30, 2021, Justice Wejuli Nabwire dismissed Ssentamu’s petition and upheld the victory of Nayebale on a technicality, saying Ssentamu paid filing fees of sh10,000 less than what is legally prescribed (sh150,000).

However, Ssentamu lodged an election petition appeal in the Court of Appeal, which sent the petition back to the High Court for retrial before another judge.
