Bishop Odongo urges Christians to embrace peace, unity ahead of elections

The Anglican Bishop of Soroti Diocese, Rt Rev. Kosea Odongo, has called on Christians to embrace unity, peace and reconciliation as Uganda prepares for the general elections next year.
Bishop Odongo delivered the message while preaching during a Christmas Day service held on Thursday at St Peter’s Cathedral in Soroti city, which attracted hundreds of worshippers from across the diocese.
The service was attended by the State Minister for Fisheries, Hellen Adoa, who appealed to the Church to continue praying for the nation, particularly as the country heads into a politically sensitive period.
In his sermon, Bishop Odongo reflected on the birth of Jesus Christ, describing it as a powerful lesson in God’s love, humility and the true meaning of greatness.
“Jesus was born in a place where animals stay and lay in a manger. This teaches us that greatness is not about status but about service. God walks through ordinary people because He values all of us,” the bishop said.
He emphasised that Christ’s kingdom contrasts sharply with worldly power, noting that Jesus came not as a political ruler but as a humble Saviour whose mission was to redeem humanity from sin.
“As we celebrate Christmas this year, let it be a confession of our sins that leads to salvation. Jesus has come to save us from our sins. Let Him bring joy to all of us,” Odongo added.
The bishop urged Christians to allow the message of Christmas to transform their lives, relationships and conduct in society.
“Let us celebrate with unity, peace, reconciliation and love that comes from Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace,” he said.
He further observed that the world today is troubled by violence, immorality, fear and wickedness, similar to the period before Christ’s birth.
“This was a world affected by sin, false gods and hopelessness until Jesus came as the Saviour of the world, the Redeemer of mankind,” he said.
Quoting from Luke 2:10, Bishop Odongo reminded believers of the angels’ message of hope.
“Do not be afraid, not of sickness, not of enemies, not even of death.”
He encouraged Christians to live without fear and to place their trust in God, especially in uncertain times.
The Christmas service concluded with prayers for peace in the country, healing for the sick and guidance for leaders as Uganda approaches another election cycle.
