The Bishop of Ruwenzori Diocese, Reuben Kisembo, has challenged the newly installed Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo to remain faithful to his wife and honour the marriage vows he made before God, reminding him that the Church of Uganda does not support polygamy.
“We ask you to stick to that one wife you made vows with,” Kisembo said.
The Bishop said the King’s marriage was not only a private family matter, but also an important part of the example he would set as a Christian and cultural leader.
He reminded King Nyabongo that leadership comes with responsibility and that his conduct would be closely watched by the people he leads.
The message came during a ceremony filled with celebration as the church formally welcomed and recognised the new King before his official installation.
Inside the church, the atmosphere was already charged with anticipation. The catechist appreciated everyone who had contributed to making the occasion possible before mentioning the name of Omusuuga Charles Kamurasi, prompting the church to erupt into wild ululations.
For nearly a minute, the congregation chanted the King’s name, clapped and celebrated. His mother also joined the emotional moment, visibly moved by the warm reception.
When the cleric officially introduced King Nyabongo, the celebrations grew even louder.
Despite the overwhelming excitement around him, the King remained composed. He did not smile or wave but sat quietly, taking in the significance of the occasion.
Beside King Nyabongo was his Queen, Rebecca Amoding, who wore a radiant smile that captured the warmth of the moment.
Bishop Kisembo used the opportunity to also call upon the people of Tooro to respect their new King and support him as he begins his leadership.
He appealed for peace and unity, urging subjects to give the new administration an opportunity to settle and serve.
The media was also asked to report objectively, while TikTokers and other online commentators were encouraged to avoid creating unnecessary tension.
“We want to have a peaceful transition,” the Bishop said.
Kisembo further challenged the King to promote transparency in the affairs of the kingdom and to work closely with the people.
The Bishop called for a clear distinction between the King's personal property and property belonging to the kingdom.
He urged the King to empower the Supreme Council so that it can effectively perform its responsibilities and contribute to the development of the kingdom.
Youth empowerment was another major issue that the Bishop raised.
"You should invest in young people, create opportunities for them and encourage them to develop their talents instead of wasting their time," Kisembo implored the King.
Education was also highlighted as a key priority. The Bishop called upon parents to take responsibility for their children's education, noting that some children are unable to remain in school because their parents fail to pay school fees.
He urged the King to champion education and encourage parents to fulfil their responsibilities.
The Bishop also called for environmental conservation, urging the kingdom to embrace tree planting and protect the environment for future generations.
He raised concerns about the high HIV cases in Tooro sub-region and prayed for a reduction in new infections. Uganda records an estimated 37,000 new HIV infections annually, with Tooro among the heavily affected sub-regions. Recent statistics show a concerning rise in HIV prevalence in Tooro, with rates soaring to 12%, significantly above the national average of 7.3%.
He further called for action against drunkenness and drug abuse, urging the new leadership to help build healthier communities.
Meanwhile, Bishop Kisembo thanked members of the 21st succession team for the work they have done in selecting the person entrusted with leading the kingdom.
The Bishop also commended the Teso cultural team for their contribution to the ceremony and for presenting a respectful Queen.
“We thank Omusuuga,” the Bishop said, expressing confidence that the kingdom could enter a new chapter of growth and unity.
