KAMPALA - Judiciary permanent secretary Dr Pius Bigirimana has been elected chairperson of the Southern and Eastern Africa Judicial Administration Association (SEAJAA).
Today, September 30, 2024, at the Judiciary's headquarters in Kampala, Bigirimana, formerly an ordinary member of the SEAJAA executive committee, took over the reins from chief court administrator of Tanzania Prof. Elisante Ole Gabriel.
The election marks a milestone for Bigirimana who has been instrumental in championing innovative reforms and enhancing accountability and efficiency in government programmes.
As SEAJAA chairperson, Bigirimana will likely continue to advocate for judicial excellence and administrative improvements in the region.
Botswana's High Court chief registrar Beaulah Kgakgamatso Mguni has retained her position as SEAJAA's vice-chairperson, while Judiciary of Namibia’s executive director Benhardt Kukuri continues to serve as secretary general.
Additionally, the representative from Malawi has maintained the role of treasurer general. Angola has joined the executive committee as a new ordinary member.
Bigirimana expressed his passion for serving the Judiciary of Uganda, pledging to extend this commitment to ensure the Judiciaries of member states thrive through shared experiences and mutual support.
This aligns with the Southern and Eastern Africa Chief Justices' Forum (SEACJF) 2024, hosted by Uganda's Judiciary from September 30 to October 5, 2024, at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala.
Background
SEAJAA was established in 2017 to support judiciaries across Southern and Eastern Africa.
The association, now with 14 member countries, focuses on sharing best practices, fostering cooperation on common concerns, and promoting the rule of law, democracy, and judicial independence.
It also works to strengthen the institutions responsible for judicial administration in its member countries.
The member countries of the association include Kenya, Eswatini, Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Seychelles, Zambia, Zanzibar, Zimbabwe and Uganda.
