KAMPALA - Arua Regional Referral Hospital accountant Augustine Omongin has been charged with embezzlement and abuse of office and remanded to Luzira prison.
Omongin, 56, was on February 27, 2025, charged before the Anti-Corruption Court principal magistrate grade one, Paul Mujun. He denied the charges.
The magistrate adjourned the case to March 3, 2025, when court is expected to hear Omongin’s bail application.
The Prosecutor from the Inspectorate of Government, Dr Ernest Katwesigye, alleges that Omongin, while employed as the accountant of Arua Regional Referral Hospital accountant, caused financial loss of shillings 182.6 million to the Government of Uganda.
It is also alleged that Omongin, on November 15, 2024, while employed as an accountant deployed at Arua Regional Referral Hospital, stole 88.8m, belonging to his employer, Arua Regional Referral Hospital, which money he had access to by virtue of his office.
The prosecution further purports that Omongin, between October 13, 2020, and November 30, 2024, while employed as an accountant deployed at Arua Regional Referral Hospital, in abuse of the authority of his office, did arbitrary acts when he
irregularly prepared in his name and cashed cheque no.006685 amounting to shillings 93.8 million meant for the payment for training on Essential MN Guidelines, and put it to personal use, acts that were prejudicial to the interests of his employer, the Government of Uganda/Arua Regional Referral Hospital.
