GULU - Construction of the multi-billion-shilling commercial mall at Holy Rosary Catholic Parish in Gulu Archdiocese is nearing completion afer compeleting 60%  of the construction works , project managers have confirmed.

The ambitious project, which is expected to transform the parish into a self-sustaining institution, is being undertaken at a cost of Sh3.6 billion by ZEEP Construction Company Limited.

The commercial complex is being constructed behind Holy Rosary Church in Laroo-Pece Division, Gulu City, and is expected to become a major business hub while providing a sustainable source of revenue for the parish.

On Sunday,  while celebrating Mass at Holy Rosary Parish, Raphael p’Mony Wokorach  on June 21st used the occasion to rally Christians and well-wishers to support the ongoing construction effort.

He urged the faithful in Acholi to embrace the philosophy of unity, peace, and development championed by former Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi, saying such values would help communities address their challenges collectively.

The Parish Priest of Holy Rosary Parish, Rev. Fr. Erick Justin Uma, said the mall is intended to generate sustainable income for the church.

“The facility will house a banking hall, supermarket, pharmacies, restaurant, and several shops. This will help the parish become financially self-reliant,” Fr. Uma said.

He noted that should contributions from parishioners prove insufficient, the church may seek a bank loan to ensure the project is completed on schedule.

Fr. Uma also revealed that once completed, the Centenary Bank Market branch is expected to relocate to the new facility.

Project Manager Robinson Payolem said construction progress has been steady despite initial challenges encountered during the foundation stage.

“We experienced delays because the construction site had several pits that first had to be filled to create a firm foundation,” Payolem explained.

According to him, the first phase of the project is expected to be completed and handed over by September this year.

The project was officially launched on October 31, 2025, when the archbishop of the Gulu Archdiocese, Most Rev. Raphael P’mony Wokorach, laid the foundation stone.
However, actual construction work commenced on February 13, 2026.

Funding for the project is being sourced from parish savings, donations from parishioners, and contributions from well-wishers.

During the fundraising drive, leaders from Nwoya District, including local council leaders, district officials, and legislators under their umbrella association, Nwoya Community in Gulu City, contributed Shs5 million towards the project.

The delegation, led by Nwoya District Woman MP Christine Lanyero Awany, pledged to raise a total of Shs10 million for the cause.

Meanwhile, Amuru District Woman MP Lucy Akello pledged more than Shs5 million of which she deposited Shs 2 million in cash on Sunday.

Nwoya East MP, Geoffrey Patrick Okello, also appealed to the public to support the initiative, saying investing in the spread of the Gospel was among the most worthwhile causes.
