Archbishop Ssemogerere ordains nine priests, cautions against self-glorification

Kampala Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere has ordained nine priests and six deacons, urging them to be faithful and zealous preachers and genuine witnesses of the Gospel.
Using Jesus, the Good Shepherd, as an example, Ssemogerere called on the new ministers to remain committed to the people they will serve and to do so with love and humility.

“Priesthood is a gift God gives to those He has chosen. You have been ordained during a challenging time, when many people are suffering, troubled and abandoned. Many are languishing in prisons, without even knowing the reason why they are there. Others are sick. Such are the many disadvantaged people who are eagerly waiting for you to come and console them.
“Please help them to experience the mercy, hope and loving kindness of Jesus. Endeavour to be close to them. Share their joys. Give them hope and consolation when they are troubled,” Ssemogerere said.
He urged the new priests to remain holy and prayerful and to deepen their devotion to Mary, the Mother of Priests. He also assured them that their brother priests would welcome them and work with them in harmony.
During the ordination Mass at Lubaga Cathedral on Saturday, August 8, 2026, Ssemogerere ordained Fr Patrick Kalyango from Mitala-Maria Parish; Fr Joseph Santana from Mbuya Parish; Fr Ambrose Lubinga from Kawanda Parish; Fr James Kaweesa from Lweza Parish; Fr Edwin Adrian Kangavve from Lubaga Cathedral Parish; Fr Alex Kizito Kawere from Kitagobwa Parish; Fr Ronald Kakooza from Kkonge-Lukuli Parish; Fr Leonard Sserugo from Kigoowa Parish; and Fr Victor Mugisha Fernandes from Ntebe Parish.
Ssemogerere cautions against fundraising
In his final remarks, Ssemogerere cautioned the new priests against turning their thanksgiving celebrations into fundraising events.

“A thanksgiving function must remain a thanksgiving function. Please let our people celebrate. Don’t stress them. They already have their other problems. The way your senior brothers got what they wanted is how you will get what you want,” he said.
National Youth Convention
During the same function, Ssemogerere announced that Kampala Archdiocese will host a national youth convention at the YES Centre in Nsambya from December 7 to 13, 2026.
He said the convention is expected to attract about 20,000 young people from Catholic dioceses across Uganda.
He appealed to Christians to support the convention by donating money and food and encouraged those able to host participants in their homes to do so.
The ordination Mass was concelebrated by Archbishop Dr Augustine Kasujja, the Apostolic Nuncio; Msgr Georges Kwami Kouwonou, Chargé d’Affaires at the Apostolic Nunciature in Mbuya; and more than 400 priests.
