Amuru Town Council has announced plans to name a road in honour of Speaker Anita Annet Among in recognition of her significant contributions to the country.
The announcement was made by Richard Kamara Okumu, the mayor of Pabbo Town Council, on Saturday, February 15, 2025, during a fundraising event for the Kilak Farmers' Cooperative Society Limited in Pabbo town.
The event was attended by Speaker Among, Atiak Sugar proprietor, Amina Hersi, and several ministers, including the labour state minister, Esther Anyakun, and the sports state minister, Peter Ogwang.
“We request Madam Speaker that you help us and put for us a tarmac road of 5km and that road will be in your name. We have one already called Kaguta Museveni Road, as you go to our headquarters. But the road is not as good as the name of the President,” Okumu stated.
He also called on the Speaker to support efforts to extend electricity beyond the town council, highlighting that many residents rely on power-intensive trades such as woodworking and welding.
“Newly created local government is lacking staff, and of course, Amuru district is a bit special because it is very wide. We always feel nervous about requesting LC V and CAO on the issue of recruitment. Pabbo Town Council should have a minimum of eighteen staff, but as I talk now, we have only six technical staff,” Okumu explained.
Additionally, he appealed to the government to provide garbage collection trucks.
Steven Odongtoo, the LC V councillor representing Pabbo Town Council, noted that there were still unfulfilled pledges they hoped Among could help fast-track.
“On November 7, 2023, we met the President, and in that meeting, the President pledged to support the district council of Amuru with motorcycles to monitor service delivery. He promised sh100m to Amuru district councillors (north and south) to boost their economy. Then he promised 2000 iron sheets to be given to primary schools in Amuru. I hope this will reach the President,” Odongtoo said.
Embrace NRM
Speaker Anita Annet Among invited the councillors to Parliament and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to uplifting citizens out of poverty, contributing sh16m to the cooperative.
She also encouraged residents, especially opposition leaders, to join the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
“I want to assure you that once you are in the kitchen, there is no way you can fail to get food,” Among advised.
According to Anyakun, the Greater North, having endured immense hardship, should not allow self-seekers to mislead them now that tangible development is taking shape.
“People come from some places to deceive us. This time we are not going to accept. They are using us to step up. Apart from NRM, which is bringing developmental things for northern Uganda—Karamoja, Acholi, West Nile—the rest are wasting our time. We were all affected by the war, but right now our eyes are open. We shall not accept these small groups to come and disturb,” she asserted.
“Forget about jokers. There are tourists who will come here… That seat for the Presidency is not for trial. It is for tested, experienced drivers who will deliver us where we want to be. That’s none other than Yoweri Kaguta Museveni,” Ogwang added.
