Aggressive elephant gunned down in Kiryandongo

A game ranger shot and killed an elephant on Friday that had become aggressive to the people in Karuma town council, Kiryandongo district.

The elephant strayed from Karuma Wildlife Reserve and was reported to be terrorizing the communities of Ayuda cell, Gwara I, Gwara II, Abindo cell in Karuma.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority in Murchison Falls National Park responded to the alarm from the community to chase the elephant back to the protected area but ended up shooting it dead at Ayuda cell in Karuma town council, Kiryandongo district when it turned aggressive.

A witness who spoke on conditions of anonymity said a game ranger who was persuing the elephant survived narrowly when the elephant turned on him.

“The elephant became aggressive and wanted to harm the ranger, “the source said, adding that the unidentified ranger survived narrowly after he slipped and fell. He opened fire to rescue himself from the charging elephant.

The warden in charge of Karuma Wildlife Reserve, James Peter Ewau, when contacted, declined to comment and referred us to the Conservation Area Manager of Murchison Falls National Park.

Some months ago, Guma Scot a Game Ranger attached to Wangkwar detach was attacked and killed at Agung in Nwoya district by a stray elephant that invaded from Murchison Falls Nation Park.
