37 arrested over Imvepi Refugee Settlement riots

TEREGO - Police have arrested 37 South Sudanese refugees following violent riots at Imvepi Refugee Settlement in Terego District, with investigations into the incident still ongoing.
The suspects were arrested by the Terego District Police team by 9:00am on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
West Nile Regional Police spokesperson Josephine Angucia said two refugees died from stray bullets during the violence after they attacked Imvepi Police Station.
“By 9:00am today, 37 suspects had been arrested by the Terego police as investigations continue. The two who died of stray bullets were among the South Sudan refugees who attacked Imvepi Police Station,” Angucia said.
Police have continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the riots and the attack on the police station, with more arrests possible as investigators establish the roles of those involved.

The violence broke out on Tuesday afternoon (August 25) after a disagreement over Refugee Welfare Council (RWC) 3 elections in Imvepi settlement.
The disagreement was between the two candidates contesting for the position of the RWC3 Imvepi attracted different tribes settled in the settlement.
This resulted in violence, which led to the vandalism of properties at the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the police, which were later set on fire.
The angry and riotous refugees continued to cause havoc, and it took the intervention of officers from the Uganda police and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces to contain the situation.
