Another 255 Ugandan nationals returned home on Sunday, bringing the total number of Ugandans evacuated from South Africa to 560 amid ongoing xenophobic violence and anti-migrant protests.
According to Uganda's Embassy in South Africa, Sunday's group was the third batch of evacuees. The first flight brought back 273 Ugandans, while the second, which arrived on Friday, carried 32.
In a post on social media platform X, the embassy said the evacuation, coordinated with the Ugandan military, is voluntary.
"Uganda today is a land of immense opportunities, and the returnees will be able to prosper even better at home," Chris Magezi, spokesperson for the military, said after receiving the evacuees at Entebbe International Airport.
Some of the returnees are undergoing a government-led training program designed to equip them with the mindset and skills needed for successful reintegration into Ugandan society.
