Police in Busia Municipality in Busia district have arrested 11 suspects during an intelligence-led operation targeting criminal gangs linked to a surge in urban crime.

The operation, conducted on March 15, 2026, focused on crime-prone areas, including Majengo, Katanga, and Solo cells.

According to Bukedi South regional police spokesperson Moses Mugwe, the suspects were found armed with crude weapons, including pangas, knives, and scissors.

“They were charged with being idle and disorderly with intent to commit a felony,” Mugwe said.

The suspects include Twaha Andy, Sharif Dan, Bashir Wejuli, Asuman Wambede, and John Waswa, among others.

Police say the groups had been using dark spots to plan crimes after consuming narcotics.

Residents have welcomed the operation and called for more crackdowns to curb crime.
