Question
I am male and aged 35. For the past years I have been getting an erection and sustaining it to the end of sexual intercourse.
However, two months ago, I noticed that I struggle to get an erection and to sustain it.
I confided in a friend who told me I could be developing erectile dysfunction. What could be happening to me?
Kindly help
Answer: Dear Peter, It is true that you are grappling with erectile dysfunction. Erectile difficulties that begin suddenly, especially after a long period of normal function, can be caused by many factors.
The good news is that most are treatable or manageable. The cause of erectile dysfunction could be reduced male hormone called testosterone or reduced blood flow to the genitals or extreme stressful life conditions.
Stress, anxiety (including performance anxiety), depression or fatigue and worrying about not being able to perform can create a cycle that makes it harder to get or keep an erection.
Relationship issues can also play a role. Other factors are poor blood circulation due to high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol or heart problems.
You need evaluation by a urologist to find the cause and to recommend treatment.
