Health authorities in Lira city have reassured the public after laboratory results confirmed that a suspected Ebola case reported over the weekend was negative for the virus.

Lira Regional Referral Hospital announced on June 8, 2026, that a 42-year-old boda boda rider who had been isolated following symptoms consistent with Ebola Virus Disease was not infected.

The patient was first reported to the hospital’s medical emergency team on June 6, 2026, after developing symptoms including haematemesis (vomiting blood), fever, severe headache and general body weakness. These symptoms initially raised concern of a possible Ebola infection.

In line with national Ebola response protocols, the patient was isolated and admitted to the hospital’s isolation unit, where medical teams carried out detailed investigations under strict infection prevention and control measures.

Laboratory results received on June 7 confirmed that the patient tested negative for Ebola Virus Disease.

Despite receiving medical attention, the patient later died. Further clinical assessment established liver failure as the underlying cause of illness and the symptoms observed.

Lira Regional Referral Hospital extended condolences to the family of the deceased.

Hospital director Dr Andrew Odur said the facility has strengthened its preparedness and response systems since the Ebola outbreak was declared in the country, enabling faster investigation and management of suspected cases.

He urged the public to remain vigilant, understand the signs and symptoms of Ebola, and continue adhering to recommended public health guidelines and standard operating procedures.

Odur also called on health workers to maintain high alertness when handling patients, noting that any unusual symptoms or suspected cases should be reported immediately to the district surveillance team and the regional medical emergency operations centre for prompt action.

He reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to early detection, rapid response, and strict adherence to national disease surveillance and outbreak response protocols.
