NAMUTUMBA - Residents of Nangonde town council in Namutumba district have a reason to smile following the upgrading of Nangonde Health Centre (HC) II to a fully-fledged HCIII at a cost of shillings 909 million for better service delivery.

For years, residents who have been struggling with medical services have been trekking long distances to neighbouring districts of Iganga, Jinja and Mable for specialised health services at higher costs.

Housing state minister Persis Namuganza, while officiating at the launch of the health facility on March 5, 2025, which was constructed by Galisonga Construction Company, expressed gratitude to government for prioritising healthcare services in Namutumba.

“Elevating the health centre is a big relief for people who have been trekking long distances looking for specialized health services. We have been facing a challenge of health services in this area but it is now solved with this new facility constructed by the government," she said.

Namuganza lauded the Government for undertaking notable developments in the rural areas citing electricity which was distributed in most parts of Namutumba.

Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Fredrick Bangu urged the health centre user committee to take good care of the facility and maintain it using part of the Primary Health Care (PHC) funds.

Bangu said the upgraded facility has been fully equipped with 18 staff and that they have also constructed staff houses and a theatre for minor surgeries.

With this, he warned against absenteeism and theft of drugs which hinder service delivery saying that anyone caught would be put under disciplinary action.

“In the new development, staff houses have been constructed. We don’t expect to get reports of absenteeism and late coming with theft of government drugs because people have been suffering to get better health services which have now been brought closer. Those found in the illegal practices stand warned because anyone found in the act will face disciplinary action,” Bangu said.

However, Bangu expressed the importance of mutual respect among politicians, even in the midst of intense competition warning that the law would be strictly enforced against any politician found disrespecting their rivals.

Bangu also urged voters to remain united and not allow themselves to be divided by politicians. This was after a dramatic scene unfolded when expectant mothers forcefully seized and ripped apart mother kits donated by Hon. Naigaga which led to injuries.

The uncoordinated initiative [donation] caused the chaos which was a shaming towards mothers who were seen fighting for mother kits of twenty thousand shillings, Namuganza said.

Earlier, during the function, Member of Parliament Naigaga was chased away from an event commissioning Nangonde Health Centre III in Nangonde town council by youths who expressed concern over what they regarded as non-performance of her duties and threatened to hold her accountable come 2026 general elections.
