Driven by rising demand for advanced, affordable, and innovative technologies, Uganda’s pharmaceutical sector is projected to grow from $ 117.1 million in 2024 to $131.1 million in 2025.
This marks an annual growth rate of nearly 9.5%, up from 6% in previous years.
The growth is partly expected to be driven by demand for medical devices, whose market is undergoing a significant transformation. As a result, health professionals are being urged to take part in shaping this evolving landscape.
These revelations were made during a media briefing to announce the Pharma Expo 2025 slated for July 1-3, 2025, in Kampala. Organisers said the event is expected to bring together several stakeholders to showcase innovations in medicines, medical equipment and healthcare solutions.
Kirti Shah, the chairperson of the Uganda Pharmaceutical Promoters Association and managing director of Vrushik Investment, said the expo is the first of its kind and aims to foster collaboration among players in the pharmaceutical and medical technology sectors.
Dr Joel Mirembe, the secretary general of the Uganda Medical Association (UMA), projected that Uganda’s medical market will reach $206.60 million by 2030, up from $156.20 million in 2020.
“This impressive growth is driven by shifting consumer preferences, rapid adoption of technology and a growing demand for portable diagnostic tools, especially crucial in rural and underserved communities,” Mirembe noted.
Uganda Dental Association president Dr Mathew Rubona emphasized the importance of oral health, often an overlooked area of public health.
"Oral health is inseparable from general health,” Rubona said, noting that the dental sector in Uganda has seen growing investment in technology and services, improving access to dental care nationwide.
