Mulago National Referral Hospital has successfully performed breast reconstruction and reduction surgeries as part of its ongoing free medical camp.

In one notable case, a woman aged between 20 and 30 years, who had been suffering from chronic back, shoulder, and chest pain due to a condition called macromastia, caused by abnormally large breasts, benefited from the camp. She learned about the event through a flyer shared on WhatsApp.

On Wednesday, April 8, she reported that her chronic pain had finally subsided.

The hospital in a post on social media X states that during the ongoing second Breast Reconstruction Camp, "over 20 patients will receive life-changing procedures, including breast reconstruction and reduction, supporting survivors of breast cancer & women facing complications from excessive breast size".

The camp is run in collaboration between Mulago Hospital and Interplast Netherlands.

Dr Irene Asaba Mugisha, the head of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Unit, describes breast reconstruction as complex, with each procedure taking between three and six hours.

She revealed that surgeons often use the patient’s own tissue, harvested from the abdomen or back, to recreate a new breast mound.

A New Vision survey at private medical facilities in Kampala established that the same procedures cost a minimum of sh14 million.
