Geoffrey Toopiny Onyuta, the Gulu City Health Educator has revealed that malaria is still a public health concern in Gulu City despite preventive measures in place like the use of mosquito repellants, sleeping under treated mosquito nets, and clearing bushes around homesteads, among others.
Toopiny cited that between July and December last year, Gulu City registered 38,727 malaria cases out of 324,854 people who visited outpatient departments of the various health facilities within the city.
Children under the age of five were the most affected, according to Toopiny, adding that of the 3,618 malaria patients were in admittance in the various health facilities, 36 succumbed to the disease, 21 of whom were children aged five and below, during that same period.
Today, Uganda joins the rest of the world to celebrate World Malaria Day with the national celebration in Kaunda Ground, Gulu City under the theme: "Malaria ends with us: reinvest, re-imagine, re-ignite," emphasizing the urgency of actions to combat the disease.
