KAMPALA - Hundreds of residents in Nsambya, a city suburb have embraced free medical services.

The services offered included eye care, dental check-up, screening of Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs) and blood donation drive, among others.

Dr Bildard Baguma, the executive Director of Joint Medical Store (JMS) said the medical camp was part of the activities to celebrate 43rd anniversary.

He said they partnered with Mengo hospital to offer the services.

Dr Susan Nakireka, head of the wellness clinic at Mengo hospital said community outreaches were useful because they have been able to detect people with NCDs who are not aware of the condition.

She said in Uganda, 35 percent of deaths are due to NCDs. The NCDs include cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and Diabetes among others.

“What we are seeing today, people are not aware that these diseases are there, people hardly go for screening and those who come to the hospital, come with complications. We have seen people with heart attack, those who come with stroke, and those with poor vision, without knowing that they had NCD,’’ Nakireka said.
