Pader District authorities have urged the government to expedite the construction of a rehabilitation centre for children suffering from nodding syndrome in the district.
According to the Pader District Health Department, there are currently 1,359 children affected by nodding syndrome, with 562 in severe condition.
The sub-counties most impacted by the syndrome are Awere and Atanga.
Benson Opiyo, the acting District Health Officer in Pader, noted that during a previous visit, President Yoweri Museveni directed the establishment of a rehabilitation centre for affected children; however, no progress has been made to date.
Opiyo expressed hope that the centre would enhance support and healthcare services for these children.
During her recent visit to Pader, Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng stated that the construction of the rehabilitation center is under the mandate of the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development.
She clarified that the Ministry of Health is responsible for treating, managing, and preventing diseases.
Aceng also highlighted that the Ministry of Health is implementing various measures to control the vector responsible for spreading the disease.
