Sulaiman Bukenya – Ugandan Entrepreneur and Cultural Advocate

Bukenya Sulaiman (born 15 February 1986) is a Ugandan entrepreneur, philanthropist, and cultural advocate. He is the founder and chairman of Uganda Online Investments Ltd, a diversified business group with interests in electronics, hospitality, agro-processing, real estate, and media.

 

He is also the director of Uganda Online Media, a platform focused on delivering positive, developmental news and promoting Uganda’s culture and values.

 

Early Life and Education

 

Bukenya was born at Rubaga Hospital in Kampala and raised in Busega Nateete, a suburb of the capital. Orphaned at a young age, he grew up facing significant challenges but remained determined to build a successful future. His personal struggles shaped his resilience and passion for community empowerment.

 

He pursued his higher education at Makerere University and later undertook short courses in Media, Ethics, and Governance at the University of Amsterdam and Psychology at Yale University. He also holds financial certifications, which contributed to his entrepreneurial acumen.

 

Career and Business Ventures

 

In 2015, Bukenya founded Uganda Online Investments Ltd, which has since expanded into multiple sectors:

 

Electronics: Supplying quality consumer electronics to households and businesses.

 

Hospitality: Establishing guesthouses and hotel experiences in Uganda.

 

Agro-processing: Supporting value addition in agriculture to promote local produce.

 

Real Estate: Investing in commercial and residential property development.

 

Media: Running Uganda Online Media, a news and information platform that highlights local culture, success stories, and social development.


Through these businesses, Bukenya aims to create jobs, modernise Uganda’s economy, and bridge gaps between rural and urban communities.

 

Cultural Promotion

 

Bukenya is a strong proponent of Buganda heritage. He founded and organises the Buganda Expo, an annual event that promotes the Kingdom’s traditional crafts, tourism, and innovation. He is also the force behind Miss Tourism Buganda, a pageant designed to showcase Buganda’s beauty, talent, and tourism potential.

 

His cultural work reflects his belief that preserving and promoting traditional values can coexist with digital innovation and economic development..

 

Philanthropy and Social Work

 

Outside of business, Bukenya is dedicated to community upliftment. He sponsors financial literacy campaigns across Buganda and regularly donates food, clothing, and school materials to underprivileged children. His approach to giving emphasises sustainability, encouraging families and youth to become self-reliant and economically informed.

 

He also supports initiatives aimed at empowering women and youth through entrepreneurship training and cultural education.

 

Community and Religious Ties

 

Bukenya maintains close ties with the Buganda royal family, often working alongside figures such as Prince David Wasajja and the Nnabagereka (Queen). He is a committed supporter of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II and participates in cultural events that promote unity and heritage within the Kingdom.

 

As a practising Muslim, he is active in Uganda’s Islamic community and is closely associated with Prince Dr. Kassim Nakibinge, a prominent Muslim leader in Uganda.
