In
an effort to fight the spread of the Ebola virus, security in East Busoga region have suspended political thanksgiving ceremonies and other social gatherings with immediate effect.

The suspension was announced by the regional police spokesperson, Micheal Kasadha, during a media briefing in Iganga municipality.

Kasadha asked the organisers of such events to seek clearance from the health ministry, which will guide them on the standard operating procedures for such events.

He said they have already talked to the politicians who had organised events, saying they expect them to comply with the directives to avoid collision with security.

Kasadha said they came up with the measures to neutralise the spread of Ebola, as such functions attract large numbers of people.

Kasadha also asked owners of public places like hotels, bars, schools, and hospitals to observe the standard operating procedures like washing hands and measuring people’s body temperature.

East Busoga region consists of six districts namely: Iganga, Namutumba, Mayuge, Bugiri, Namayingo and Bugweri.

Over 500 suspected Ebola cases have been reported in DR Congo, with over 130 deaths. In Uganda, two cases have been confirmed with one death.
