Dr Stephen Oringtho, the Omoro District Health Officer, has said that most lower-level government health facilities in the district are grappling with bat infestations.

In some facilities, such as Lela-Obaro Health Centre II in Bobi sub-county, the situation has forced health workers to attend to patients under tents, as the facility’s roof is heavily infested with bats, according to Dr Oringtho.

He is, however, hopeful that the invaders will be evicted, since several of the affected health facilities are undergoing rehabilitation.

These include Bobi Health Centre III in Bobi Sub-county, Binya Health Centre II and Odek Health Centre III in Odek sub-county, Lujorongole Health Centre II in Lakwana sub-county, and Awor Health Centre II in Akidi sub-county.

Others are Lapainat Health Centre III in Labora sub-county, Ongako Health Centre III in Ongako sub-county, Abwoch Health Centre II in Abuga sub-county, Te-Kulu Health Centre II in Aremo sub-county, and Lukwir Health Centre II in Lakwaya sub-county.

Godfrey Ojera Adoko, Chairperson of Lela-Obaro Village, revealed that the facility was fumigated last year, but the exercise did not eliminate the bats.

Isaac Newton Ojok, the Omoro District Secretary for Health, Education, and Community-Based Services, said that renovation works worth sh40 million are underway at the facility, adding that once completed, the bat infestation is expected to be resolved.
