KAMPALA - The family court in Kampala will tomorrow (Tuesday) start hearing a case in which a Ugandan woman sued her American husband after the father of their four children allegedly got involved in another relationship while their marriage is still subsisting.

Rachael Kalule dragged her husband, Cunningham Greg, together with a Ugandan woman, Dorah Nampijja, to the family court.

Kalule is accusing Greg of bigamy and eloping with Nampijja when they are still married.

This is after it emerged that Greg was reportedly introduced by Nampijja, with a view to marry her yet he (Greg) is still married to Kalule.

New Vision online has learnt that the bigamy and elopement case is registered as number 0144 of 2026.

Through Twagira and Birungi Company Advocates, Greg states that he does not deny being the lawful husband to Kalule, but denies being married to Nampijja.

According to the lawyers, Greg and Nampijja are friends based on the fact that Kalule had filed a petition for divorce against Greg.

The lawyers state that Greg only paid a courtesy visit to the parents of Nampijja, but there was no marriage conducted.

“What makes a customary marriage is the payment of bride price and registration of the marriage, but none of these was done,” the lawyers stated in a letter addressed to the officer in charge of Masanafu Police Station, Rubaga Division in Kampala.

The letter dated May 5, 2026, was copied to Ssemakula and Company Advocates, the law firm representing Kalule. The letter was written in response to a complaint lodged by Kalule alleging elopement contrary to Section 114 of the Penal Code Act.

The offence of elopement carries a maximum penalty of one year’s imprisonment or a fine of sh480,000, upon conviction.

Greg's lawyers tasked Kalule to prove her allegations beyond mere photos which, they claimed can be manipulated that there was a customary marriage between Greg and Nampijja.

They stated that Kalule has already filed a case at Makindye Chief Magistrates’ Court alleging elopement and bigamy aganist Greg and Nampijja and seeking orders that the alleged marriage between the two which is non-existent be declared null and void.

The law firm contends that Kalule has not suffered any emotional distress, reputational harm and if there is any disruption to her family, she has caused it because of her unbecoming behaviour and attempt to divorce Greg even before the said visit she mistakenly calls a marriage.

“There is no need for any further investigations but in case your office finds it appropriate to do so, clients are willing to cooperate,” the lawyers state.

Greg stated that he instructed Twagira and Birungi Company Advocates to represent and defend him.

He further stated that whatever transpired between him and Nampijja did not amount to a marriage, but communication with prospective in-laws.

He stated that Kalule ended the relationship in November 2024 and vacated the home they had been sharing. Greg further alleged that Nampijja denied him conjugal rights
