Uganda pledges productive relations to IGAD

Uganda is committed to fostering strong and productive relations with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

The Minister of State for Regional Cooperation John Mulimba made the remarks while receiving copies of letters of credence from Joselyn Bigirwa, designated IGAD Head of Mission to Uganda.

The ceremony took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Kampala on Wednesday, February 14, 2024.

The Minister expressed Uganda’s commitment to fostering strong and productive relations with IGAD, an important regional organization dedicated to promoting peace, security, and development in the East African region.

Discussions between minister Mulimba and Her Excellency Bigirwa encompassed a wide range of regional issues, with a particular focus on peace and security in the IGAD region.

Both dignitaries reaffirmed the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing the various challenges facing the region, including conflict resolution, counter-terrorism, and humanitarian crises.

Mulimba commended IGAD’s ongoing initiatives aimed at promoting peace and stability in the region and reiterated Uganda’s unwavering support for IGAD’s peace-building efforts.

He emphasized the need for sustained cooperation and coordination among IGAD member states to effectively tackle shared security challenges and create an environment conducive to sustainable development.

Bigirwa expressed her appreciation for Uganda’s active participation in IGAD’s peace and security endeavours and reiterated IGAD’s commitment to working closely with Uganda and other member states to advance the organization’s objectives.

She emphasized the importance of inclusive dialogue, reconciliation, and conflict prevention in fostering lasting peace and stability in the region.

Mulimba and Bigirwa concluded the ceremony with mutual expressions of goodwill and commitment to further enhancing cooperation between Uganda and IGAD for the collective benefit of the region.

The exchange of letters of credence symbolizes the formal accreditation of Her Excellency Joselyn Bigirwa as IGAD’s Head of Mission to Uganda and signifies the beginning of her official duties in the country.
