In 2016, Trace Mziki and Jose Chameleone were involved in a bitter exchange on social media. Fast-forward to 2026, and the two appear ready to turn that old beef into a fresh business relationship.
Trace TV has partnered with Chameleone to support his upcoming Chameleone Unlimited concert, in a reunion that would have surprised anyone who followed their rather frosty relationship a decade ago.
The deal was witnessed on Monday by Trace Group boss Olivier Laouchez and the singer himself. Under the partnership, Trace TV will run advertisements for the concert across its channels and across the continent while providing exclusive event coverage to give the show wider visibility.
It is a significant endorsement for the Yeffe star, who is preparing to take his music to a broader audience with the support of an international music media brand.
But for those with long memories, this partnership comes with a delicious twist. In 2016, Trace Mziki and Chameleone were hardly exchanging pleasantries. Their relationship hit the rocks after the regional music channel appeared to support a campaign by Ugandan DJs to boycott the singer’s music over allegations that he had assaulted fellow DJ Bryan.
Chameleone was not amused. He took to social media to accuse the station of promoting hatred in the music industry through what he described as false propaganda, rather than encouraging unity.
His fans promptly descended on Trace Mziki online, turning the dispute into a full-blown public relations headache. The station eventually took down the controversial post, but the bad blood reportedly lingered.
Then came another twist: Trace Mziki allegedly blocked the singer on its social media platforms.
“Trace Mziki, did you guys really block me?” a visibly surprised Chameleone reportedly asked at the time.
Well, that was then. Today, the same music media family is throwing its promotional muscle behind his concert. From allegedly shutting the door on the singer to helping advertise his show across the continent, this is quite the plot twist.
Perhaps somebody finally found the unblocking button. Or maybe the Chameleone Unlimited concert comes with an unlimited supply of second chances.
Whatever happened behind the scenes, the reunion offers a reminder that in showbiz, yesterday’s enemies can become today’s partners when the right opportunity comes along.
