Rickman Manrick may have only needed a few minutes on the pitch, but it was enough to get social media talking.

The musician-turned-footballer, real name Derrick Ddungu, came off the bench in the 85th minute during Express FC's Kampala Derby clash against KCCA FC at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, and wasted little time announcing himself.

His debut goal helped Express secure a 2-0 victory, but beyond the final whistle, it was the reaction online that showed just how much interest Rickman's move from the music stage to the football pitch has generated.

Express FC's official X account immediately joined the celebration with a characteristically excited post: "Rickman Rick! That was not a gamble phweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwdddd. He has arrived!"

The club's post quickly captured the mood among its supporters, who were clearly enjoying the storyline of their new signing.

Sports Lens described it as a "cheeky goal" and a perfect way for the newcomer to announce himself, while football fans praised the composure he showed despite coming on so late in the game.

But, unsurprisingly, social media could not resist connecting the football moment to Rickman's music career.

Fans joked about his famous song Ebango, with some playfully suggesting that KCCA defenders might have been too busy dancing to the hit to keep track of him.

For a man better known for entertaining crowds with music, the sudden switch to football gave netizens plenty of material.

Then came the romance angle.

Rickman's girlfriend, singer Gia Nina, was spotted celebrating from the stands, giving entertainment pages another reason to join the conversation. StarTimes Uganda highlighted her reaction with the caption, "GIA NINA SMILES AS BOYFRIEND RICKMAN MANRICK SCORES," prompting fans to celebrate the couple alongside the footballer.

One fan called it the kind of motivation local football needs, while others admired the couple's public show of support.

"Take a bow Rickman, what a goal," Kacycle FC posted on X.

For Rickman, however, the moment was about more than personal glory.

Speaking after the match, he said the victory was exactly the response Express needed after losing their season opener 1-0 to BUL FC.

"When we lost to BUL, we had to get back to the drawing board and see how best we improve, and thankfully there was a good response today against KCCA, which I believe is the spark that we needed," he said.

"He's a musician, footballer, boxer, and influencer. What a young man. He is not fazed by the buzz around his love life or celebrity style. He is making multiple streams of income to change his background and inspire many young people in society. What an inspiration we have," former AIGP Asan Kasingye posted.
