Music review Tuesday: Kakana – Tracy Melon
Why is Tracy Melon at the forefront of Ugandan music? She’s got a decent enough voice, but it can’t be just that.

I was looking up Tracy Melon because I thought she might be the most likely artiste to have a song for review that would work for a week that is going to be all about Valentine’s Day.
I came across Kakana, and attached to the song title were the words ‘acoustic version’. My immediate thought was ‘This should be interesting.’

I had listened to Kakana before, but hey, this was the acoustic version, friends and neighbours. I pressed pla,y and the sound that came off the record was about as far from acoustic as it could possibly be.
I mean, it would be nice if Tracy dropped an acoustic cover of Kakana, but whatever that nonsense they have prancing around online is, it is not acoustic. All it does is leave you wishing you could use swear words to counter that claim.
I think it’s because there was a niche within the local music pop genre, a niche that Rema used to fill that really needed occupying, and she fit it perfectly.
Then along comes Tracy Melo,n who just seemed to fit the bill – and the listening public have certainly embraced her.
Kakana is the sort of song that worked because it combines a bit of sass with a heavy dose of romanticism.
And the last artiste we knew who pulled off that odd combo was Rema. I will always argue that Tracy Melon simply showed up at the right time – that’s what made her.
