I had to brace myself before doing this. I simply never got what made this kid work. And he had something of a fan base. Heck, even the artistes were lining up for collaborations. If memory serves me right, Juliana Kamyomozi, Iryn Namubiru and Dr. Hilderman all sought out collaborations with him.

In retrospect, his everyman demeanor was possibly his appeal (a bit like Phil Collins, I would think – except Collins’ music doesn’t rate on the nerves).

Sweet Kid, on the hand, had the most rudimentary, most basic approach to music. And he backed that up with a nasal, infuriating tone that you would imagine is used to torture sinners in hell.

Sanyu Lyange is typical of his music – rudimentary, yawn inducing, and somehow, hugely popular. I have never been more puzzled by an artiste. Even the video looked like it had been put together by the cleaners at UBC.

Eventually, of course, Sweet Kid decided to stop puzzling observes of the music industry, and retired from the scene.
There will be a course taught about him one day, I am sure. It will be about self-belief and making people believe what you believe. I am guessing that was his secret.
