The State Minister of Gender, Labour, and Social Development has urged young, talented Ugandans to refrain from seeking casual employment abroad, contending that this hampers the development of their creative skills.

Addressing creatives during the commemoration of World Creativity and Innovation Day, organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) at the Golf Course Hotel on April 25, 2024, Mutuuzo emphasised the importance of nurturing one's talent locally until it blossoms into recognised brands rather than seeking menial work overseas, which ultimately hinders their creative pursuits.

"Why opt for menial jobs abroad when you possess creativity and talent? Utilise your gifts and ingenuity to cultivate your craft here, utilising the limited resources available to build something uniquely yours," she remarked.

Furthermore, she highlighted the government's shift towards prioritising the creative sector, with international organisations like UNDP launching initiatives to bolster support for creatives. Hence, there is no necessity for creatives to seek job opportunities abroad.

Mutuuzo pledged ongoing support from the ministry for creatives, citing numerous forthcoming initiatives aimed at fostering talent development, skill enhancement, and facilitating product marketing.

In addition, she provided an update on efforts to amend the copyright bill, offering hope to creatives that progress on this matter would be swift.

The issue of creatives seeking opportunities abroad has long been a topic of discussion within artistic circles, particularly in the music industry. Many musicians have forsaken their talents in favour of lucrative prospects overseas, neglecting to nurture their craft at home. Often, upon their return, they find it challenging to regain momentum in an ever-evolving industry.

Notable singers who have pursued livelihoods abroad include Dre Cali, Rhoda K, Maro, Sizza Man, Michael Ross, and several others.
