For five decades, Mesach Semakula has watched Uganda change around him while remaining a constant voice in its music scene.

From the early days of his career to becoming one of the country’s most enduring musicians, the singer has built a legacy around music, mentorship and a connection with audiences that has survived generations.

Now, as he turns 50, Semakula is preparing to celebrate the milestone the best way he knows how on stage.

The music icon, affectionately known as ‘Sir’ or ‘Papa’, will mark five decades of life with Mesach Semakula Live in 50 Years of Greatness, a concert scheduled for November 13, 2026, at Kingdom Kampala.

For Semakula, however, the concert is not simply about turning 50. It is a celebration of the people, experiences and music that have shaped his journey.

Speaking at the launch of the concert at Kingdom Kampala, Semakula looked back on a career that has been built not only on his talent but also on the people who believed in him along the way.

Among those he acknowledged were filmmaker and arts personality Abbey Mukibi, singer Maria Ndagire and the late actor and politician Kato Lubwama, alongside several other figures who, he said, played important roles in his growth.

He also spoke warmly about his family, describing their support as one of the foundations that has enabled him to sustain his career over the years.

But Semakula's legacy extends beyond his own music.

Over the years, the singer has also mentored several artistes and contributed to nurturing talent, becoming part of the generation of musicians who helped shape Uganda's contemporary entertainment industry.

That history is what makes the 50 Years of Greatness celebration more than a birthday concert.

It is a moment for Semakula to look back at the journey, celebrate the people who walked it with him and reconnect with the fans who have stayed with him through different seasons of his career.

“The concert is important to me because of the passion I have for music and my fans. I have prepared myself to perform for the people who have supported me throughout the years, but most importantly to celebrate the 50 years God has given me,” Semakula said.

The concert was announced through a rather unconventional launch, taking the form of a podcast rather than a traditional press conference.

The event became the second episode of I&M Bank’s On Your Side podcast series, hosted by the bank’s Executive Director and Chief Operations Officer, Sam Ntulume.

While I&M Bank was unveiled as the official bank partner for the concert, much of the conversation centred on Semakula's journey and what five decades of life and music mean to him.

For Ntulume, there was also a natural connection between the bank and Semakula's milestone, with both having built their stories around longevity and consistency.

“We understand what milestones mean. They represent years of resilience, growth, consistency and the ability to remain relevant through changing times,” Ntulume said.

She described his music as having followed Ugandans through different spaces, from markets and taxis to weddings, nightlife and the corporate world.

“He understands what it means to show up year after year, with consistency and heart,” she added.

And that consistency is perhaps one of the biggest stories behind Semakula’s 50 years.

While music trends have changed, audiences have evolved, and new generations of artistes have emerged, he has continued to find his place within Uganda’s musical landscape.

The November concert is therefore expected to bring together longtime fans, fellow musicians, friends, family and members of the entertainment community for an evening that celebrates not just an artiste but a life spent creating, performing and inspiring.
