However, medical personnel reveal that snoring is cause for concern. \u003Cbr>\u003C/strong>\u003Cbr>According to Dr. Gregory Tumweheire, a senior consultant and ear, nose and throat specialist at Mulago Hospital, snoring is loud noise made during breathing when one is sleeping. The noise is mostly made by vibration of the soft tissue of the throat and mouth, especially the tongue and palate. Normal breathing occurs through the nose. \u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>From the nose, air is passed through part of the throat called the pharynx to the larynx (voice box), trachea and finally to the rest of the lungs. \u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>All the above parts must be open for quiet breathing to take place. Tumweheire says snoring shows that a person’s airways are partially blocked. In some cases, the enlargement is so profound that it blocks the airway, causing interference in breathing. \u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>If the child is awake, he compensates by breathing through the mouth. Since the mouth may be closed when asleep, the tongue falls back into the throat and the big tonsils come together, closing off airways passing in the mouth. \u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>When both the nose and mouth are closed, breathing becomes impossible. Total blockage of air makes the body respond by waking a person up to grasp for breathe. \u003Cbr>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cbr>Dangers \u003C/strong>\u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>Since snoring results from airways being partially blocked, it is believed that blood does not get enough oxygen.\u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>Poorlyoxygenated blood results in straining of the heart and lungs and could result in their failure. Poor oxygenation of blood, especially in a developing brain, would result into poor mental performance. \u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>Enlarged adenoids and tonsils are believed to cause cot deaths. Blocked respiration at night can cause one to wake up frequently to breathe. A person with the condition usually ends up dozing a lot during the day. \u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>\u003Cstrong>Prevention \u003C/strong>\u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>To treat snoring, one should first identify the cause. “A child with enlarged adenoids and tonsils can be operated upon to remove them.
