Mbarara night: Insurance fraternity trades policy for party

Expectations were high. Eyebrows were raised. And by the end of the night at Las Vegas Hotel Mbarara, it was clear the promise had not only been met, but dressed in white and delivered with flair.

Mbarara traded its usual quiet hum for a sparkling crescendo last Thursday night, as Uganda’s insurance fraternity swapped policy talk for party rhythm at a gala that felt closer to a movie set than a corporate gathering.

The occasion? The 8th Annual Insurance Brokers Association of Uganda (IBAU) Conference. The afterparty? An ICEA LION–hosted spectacle that had been the subject of industry whispers ever since the announcement of a Shs 100 million sponsorship.

Expectations were high. Eyebrows were raised. And by the end of the night at Las Vegas Hotel Mbarara, it was clear the promise had not only been met, but dressed in white and delivered with flair.

After a full day of panels and policy debates at Hotel Triangle, the crowd made its way across town, shedding the formal weight of “reimagining trust” for something lighter, livelier, and just a bit indulgent. The dress code, “Symphony in Monochrome,” turned out to be more than a suggestion.

It was a visual chorus. White outfits shimmered under the lights, crisp shirts glowed against the evening air, and the entire venue looked like a carefully orchestrated canvas.

Inside, the transformation was complete. A glowing tent stretched across the venue, dressed in white and gold accents, with lounge-style seating that borrowed from beachside ease rather than ballroom stiffness. It invited conversation, connection, and just enough mischief to keep things interesting.

Then came the music. Zura Band opened the night like seasoned storytellers, easing guests into the rhythm with soulful cover tunes that floated comfortably between nostalgia and groove. Glasses clinked. Laughter rose.

The open bar kept spirits buoyant, with cocktails and conversation flowing in equal measure. But it was Mbarara’s own T Paul who turned the dial from warm to electric. With crowd favorites like “Omukwano Gwo” and “Nkwagala Nyo,” he had insurers, true, and insurers, sang along, swaying, and momentarily forgetting loss ratios and underwriting margins. For a few golden minutes, spreadsheets gave way to sound.

And just when the crowd thought they had seen it all, comedian Daniel Omara stepped in and did what only he can do hold a mirror up to the industry and make it laugh at itself. Fresh off a quiet first quarter, Omara returned with sharp, witty observations about insurance culture, trust, and the peculiar habits of the trade. The result? Roaring laughter, loosened ties, and a reminder that even in a business built on caution, joy has a place.

Perhaps that was the real theme of the evening.

Beyond the glamour, beyond the music and the meticulous planning, the gala revealed something deeper.  Trust, the very idea dissected during the conference was being lived out in real time. In the easy conversations. In the shared jokes. In the way competitors became companions, if only for a night.

As the hours slipped quietly into morning, Zura Band returned to guide the final stretch, pulling the crowd into a wave of timeless hits that had everyone young and seasoned moving in sync. No one seemed in a hurry to leave. And why would they be?

For one night in Mbarara, the insurance industry rewrote its own narrative. Less paperwork, more poetry. Less risk, more rhythm.
