Five years ago, Swimmer Media set out to tell stories from Uganda’s fast-moving entertainment scene. Today, the digital platform is celebrating a milestone that reflects just how dramatically the media landscape has changed.

From music and celebrities to events, interviews and viral conversations, Swimmer Media has grown into a familiar name among Ugandans who consume their entertainment news online.

Behind the platform is Phillip Kintu, whose journey has involved navigating an industry where yesterday’s headline can quickly become today’s forgotten story and where audiences increasingly want their news on their phones, and preferably yesterday.

For Phillip, reaching the five-year mark is more than a birthday celebration. It is a testament to consistency, learning and adapting to an entertainment industry that never seems to sit still.

When Swimmer Media started, social media was already reshaping how Ugandans discovered music, followed celebrities and discussed entertainment. Five years later, the transformation has accelerated, with platforms such as TikTok becoming powerful engines for discovering artists, personalities and trends.

“Swimmer Media has ridden that digital wave, building a sizeable following through a steady stream of entertainment content. Our TikTok account has surpassed one million followers and accumulated tens of millions of likes. This is a milestone that demonstrates the muscle independent digital platforms can build when they understand where their audiences are spending their time,” he says.

But behind the likes, shares and views is the less glamorous side of digital journalism.

Entertainment stories can break at any hour, trends can change in minutes, and audiences expect updates almost instantly. Yet the pressure to be first comes with an equally important responsibility: getting the story right.

For Phillip and his team, learning to balance speed, accuracy and credibility has been part of the five-year journey. The anniversary also arrives as Uganda’s media industry continues its migration from traditional platforms to the digital space.

“Today, bloggers, independent publishers and content creators can build sizeable audiences without necessarily passing through the gates of a traditional newsroom. Social media has effectively turned phones into newsstands and audiences into instant distributors of content,” he says.

Swimmer Media has been part of that transformation, providing another digital home for entertainment stories while creating a platform through which artists, celebrities and other creatives can connect with their audiences.

Kintu  credits the people who have followed, viewed, shared and engaged with Swimmer Media’s content for helping the platform reach its fifth anniversary.

Their support, he says, has provided both motivation and a reason to keep improving.

The milestone is also a celebration of the wider entertainment ecosystem—the musicians, actors, promoters, journalists, influencers, event organisers and content creators whose work keeps Uganda’s entertainment industry buzzing and, conveniently, keeps entertainment pages busy.

As it enters its sixth year, Swimmer Media is looking beyond routine updates, with plans to strengthen its digital presence and explore more original interviews, event coverage, exclusive stories and productions that take audiences beyond the headline.

For Phillip, the next chapter is about growth while staying connected to the audience that made the first five years possible.
