From pageantry to world affairs: The bigger ambitions of Almorie Nagayi

For a young woman balancing the demands of a national beauty competition with an interest in foreign policy, the runway may be a starting point rather than a final destination.

Beauty pageants are often associated with glamour, fashion and the pursuit of a crown. For Almorie Nagayi Sophia, however, the runway represents only one part of a much broader set of ambitions.

At 19, the Miss Uganda 2026 finalist is exploring a world in which influence is not measured by applause or appearance, but by the ability to understand international developments, engage with complex policy questions and contribute to leadership conversations.

That interest has taken her into the field of foreign policy through her participation in the Foreign Policy and Leadership Programme and Early Careers Foreign Policy Analysis.

The programme is offered by the American Centre Kampala in partnership with the US Embassy Kampala, the Lincoln Institute of Diplomacy and International Relations, and the Centre for Policy and Strategic Studies (CPSS). It equips young professionals with knowledge and practical skills in diplomacy, international relations, strategic leadership and global affairs.

It also provides opportunities for mentorship, networking and engagement with practitioners working in foreign policy.

For Almorie, participation in the programme offers a dimension to her public profile that extends beyond her current pursuit of the Miss Uganda title. It places her among young people seeking exposure to the ideas, institutions and relationships that shape how countries engage with one another.

Her interest in international relations is particularly notable at a time when questions of trade, security, development and Africa's place in an increasingly interconnected world continue to shape public debate.

Although the programme does not predetermine her eventual career path, the exposure it offers is relevant to someone interested in building a future around international affairs.

Almorie's other area of focus is closer to home. Through her Beauty With a Purpose initiative, she is focusing on financial literacy and vocational skills for young women and girls, with an emphasis on practical knowledge that can support economic independence.

The two interests offer different perspectives on her ambitions: one looks towards the economic empowerment of young women, while the other opens a window into diplomacy, leadership and international engagement.

Together, they suggest a young woman exploring how influence can extend beyond personal recognition to issues affecting communities and societies.

Her pageantry experience also forms part of that journey. Having previously held the Miss Uganda High School title and represented Uganda at Miss Teen International in India, Almorie has had opportunities to experience platforms that place young women before diverse audiences.

The Miss Uganda 2026 competition, where she represents Masaka City and the Central region, could provide another such platform. But winning the title and building a career in international relations are separate pursuits, each requiring its own preparation and commitment.

The more interesting question, therefore, is not simply whether Almorie will wear the crown. It is how she will develop the interests she is already pursuing, and whether the visibility that comes with pageantry will eventually complement her wider professional ambitions.

For a young woman balancing the demands of a national beauty competition with an interest in foreign policy, the runway may be a starting point rather than a final destination.

Uganda's new beauty queen will be crowned this Saturday (October 10) during the Miss Uganda 2026 grand finale at Sheraton Hotel Kampala.
