For Racheal Hezo Kanyonyozi, better known as The Last Girl, the journey to becoming a DJ began on the other side of the booth — chasing DJs for work.

Before entering the DJing industry in 2022, Kanyonyozi worked in public relations and marketing for several bars around Kampala. Her job often involved booking and following up DJs hired to perform at the venues.

But after repeatedly chasing DJs who had already been paid, she decided she could do the job herself.

“I once told one of them, ‘You keep tossing me around, but one day I will join you guys. That will be the end of me chasing you, yet I gave you money,’” she recalls.

That thought soon became reality. When she told her female friends about her plans to become a DJ, one of them jokingly suggested the name The Last Girl.

Kanyonyozi, the last-born in her family, had long been known as the “last born”.

“She was laughing and said, ‘Kyokka, the Last Girl.'" The name sounded good to me. I also did not want to put DJ in my name like many others do,” she says.

And just like that, The Last Girl was born. She began sharpening her skills under veteran DJs Slick Stuart and Roja, before taking on gigs at different entertainment spots in Kampala.

But Kanyonyozi says she quickly realised that succeeding as a female DJ required more than just enthusiasm.

Towards the end of 2023, she travelled to Dubai for professional DJ training, where she studied the craft in a classroom setting and continued performing until 2024.

She returned to Uganda determined to turn DJing into a full-time career.

“I believe the course improved me a lot because I was learning from the very best, and I was doing it in class,” she says.

Since returning home, The Last Girl has performed at several bars and entertainment events, steadily building her profile on Kampala’s nightlife scene.

Now, she is taking another step with her first major show, simply titled The Last Girl.

The event is scheduled for Friday, October 2, at Club Guvnor Street.

Speaking at a press conference at Club Guvnor on Wednesday, Kanyonyozi promised her fans an evening of music, energy and dancing.

X FM presenter Saint Trevor, who has known The Last Girl for several years, describes her as someone who brings “pure vibes” to the entertainment scene.

He recalls that she was initially shy when she started DJing but says professional training helped her gain confidence.

“She was very shy when she started, but after getting the training, she gained confidence,” he said.

Show producer Bushingtone also assured partygoers that the event would deliver an entertaining night at Club Guvnor.
