“We decided to celebrate with our listeners where they are because they have supported us since 2009, when we first set foot in Teso," said station manager Joseph Akiiso.

KATAKWI - It was a joyous mood in Uganda's eastern district of Katakwi as Vision Group's Etop Radio celebrated 16 years of serving Teso sub-region on Friday (October 3).

The grand event that drew thousands of loyal listeners kicked off three days of festivities at Ocorimongin cattle market in Katakwi, where participants walked away with prizes, and traders recorded a boost in sales.

The celebrations were themed: 'Erikot lo Agaali', literally translated as a train.

“We decided to celebrate with our listeners where they are because they have supported us since 2009, when we first set foot in Teso," said station manager Joseph Akiiso.

"Our presence in the market also helps traders attract more customers."

For instance, Mary Acan, a clothes trader, reported increased sales on the day.

“The celebration has attracted customers even from Napak in Karamoja. Each year, Etop brings more business when they celebrate,” she said.

The celebrations will continue on Saturday in Kalaki district at Otuboi market and conclude on Monday in Kapelebyong district at Adipala market.

Akiiso said this year’s anniversary celebrations have been scaled down due to the political season, with presidential candidates currently moving around the country on their respective campaign trails.

Akiiso promised an expanded festival in 2026.

Listeners were treated to live entertainment, dancing, and meet-and-greet sessions with popular presenters including Tolbert Edait, Jonathan Okotel, and Stella Akia.

For many, the occasion was a chance to appreciate the station’s role in the community.

“The only radio I trust for truthful and timely news is Etop. Its presenters are the best in Teso, which is why I am here to celebrate with them,” said Charles Omome from the village of Getom, Abela parish in Katakwi.

A recent survey by Ipsos, a market research firm, ranked Etop as the most listened-to radio station in eastern Uganda, a position the station has maintained for years thanks to its strong audience loyalty.

This year’s celebrations also attracted corporate partners, including MTN Uganda and Dura Motors, who rewarded listeners with assorted gifts.

“We have remained a partner to Etop because of its wide following, who are also our clients,” said MTN’s supervisor, John Paul Okurut.

Dura Motors also expressed gratitude for the exposure. “The turnout was massive, and many people got to know and buy our products. We wish Etop more blessings,” said sales officer Simeo Ssentamu.

Etop Radio’s promotion officer, Stella Akia, described the opening day as vibrant and exciting, noting that the energy of the listeners set the tone for the rest of the celebrations.

She was happy that people agreed to donate blood so as to save the lives of those in need of it in health facilities.

As the station marks 16 years of broadcasting, its continued bond with listeners and partners reflects the vital role community radio plays in fostering unity, promoting business, and delivering trusted information.
