Uganda and Comoros have embarked on using art and culture as tools to strengthen their diplomatic ties.

During a visit to the National Theatre on May 7, 2024, by Djaanfar Salim Allaoui, the Comorian Minister for Youth, Sports & Culture, the two countries agreed to showcase their cultural expressions through various mediums in Uganda and Comoros.

Allaoui spoke with Prof. Opio Okaka, the chairperson of the board of trustees of the Uganda National Cultural Centre (UNCC), highlighting the significant number of Comorians in Uganda.

He emphasised the potential of this demographic to enhance bilateral relations through cultural promotion.

"We aim to create a robust relationship with Uganda, primarily through arts and culture," stated Allaoui.

In response,  Okaka expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of both nations exhibiting their cuisine, fashion, dances, music, and more at cultural events. He extended an invitation to the Comorian community to participate in the Annual Arts and Culture Festival, typically held in November.

"We are pleased to invite you to all our festivals and events where art and culture are celebrated. We would also be delighted to attend your events in Uganda and Comoros to better understand your culture," he remarked.

Furthermore, Okaka pledged support for all art and cultural activities organised by Comoros in Uganda, including potential events at the National Theatre, to further solidify this burgeoning relationship.

Hon. Allaoui, acknowledging the brevity of his visit to Uganda and the UNCC, committed to planning another visit where both countries can outline strategies for joint events to celebrate and showcase their cultures.
