Veteran actor Alex Mukulu has made a decision to return to theatre after a 17-year absence
Mukulu, who last performed in Uganda during the CommonWealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) that took place at Speke Resort Munyonyo in 2007, said he wanted to give the Ugandan audience a break.
“My being off stage all this time was that I wanted to concentrate on shows outside Uganda and I have been performing in the different parts of the world,” he said at a press conference at the Uganda National Theatre on Friday, March 22.
He is one of the actors that will be performing at the World Theatre Day celebrations that will be held at the Uganda National Culture Centre, commonly known as the National Theatre.
Mukulu revealed that he agreed to be part of the performers at the day so as to use his experience to inspire young actors and actresses.
“I have a lot of experience in this field and this is the opportunity for me to give knowledge to the current generation of actors and actresses. My two plays - Kulumbisi and Kulunkalu - will be screened,” he said.
On the challenge of theatre failing to pull Ugandans any more, he said this is a challenge that has been caused by the changes in the social economy set-up of Uganda.
“The current generation of our children are no longer interested in theatre because they have alternative sources of entertainment ranging from the internet, television and other outdoor music events, but we shall do our best even if it means performing for free to make sure that we encourage them to come and support us,” he added.
Francis Peter Ojede, the executive director of the Uganda National Culture Centre, said they will use the event to honour and pay tribute to legendary theatre figures who have made invaluable contributions to the industry such as Prof. Rose Mbowa, Wycliffe Kiyingi, Byron Kawadwa, Robert Sserumaga, Wasanyi Sserukenya and Kato Lubwama.
He said they have invited many students from the different primary and secondary schools in Kampala and Wakiso to come and be part of this event
Amelia Mbotto Kyaka, the agitating president of Uganda Centre for International Theatre Institute, said the World Theatre day is a very important day to Ugandans because theatre plays and shows are platforms where Ugandans can get different educative and informative plays and shows.
She said the day is celebrated annually on March 27 and its promoted by the International Theatre Institute centres worldwide.
